Jacksonville Corrections Officer Arrested on Domestic Battery Charge

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) Director of Investigations and Homeland Security Mark Romano announced the arrest of Corrections Lieutenant Alphonso Waddell on the morning of November 25, 2024, on a charge of domestic battery.

Waddell, who has been employed with Jacksonville Corrections for nearly 15 years, was arrested following a domestic dispute at his residence around 1:30 a.m. Officers responded to the call and were informed by the complainant, a family member, that Waddell had grabbed the complainant’s throat while they were on the phone. A minor family member witnessed the incident and corroborated the account, though the child was unharmed and is now in a safe environment.

As a result of the arrest, Waddell has been stripped of his authority as a corrections officer and placed on administrative leave. The ongoing criminal investigation will be followed by an internal investigation by JSO once the criminal case concludes.

“Our collective belief in openness, transparency, and accountability outweighs any personal allegiance to JSO employees,” Director Romano said. “As we have said many times before, no one is above the law.”

This marks the 12th arrest of a JSO employee in 2024, with four additional employees arrested by other law enforcement agencies.
