The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released details and video footage of an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Duval Station Road on November 19, 2024.
According to preliminary information, Sergeant R. Hoover, who was off-duty at the time, was informed by a construction site supervisor that the suspect had stabbed a member of the construction crew. Sergeant Hoover initiated a pursuit of the suspect in her vehicle and called for backup. Sergeant T. Robinson responded to assist.
The suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Benjamin Kubi, led the officers on a chase before pulling over and exiting the vehicle. Officers issued loud, verbal commands for Kubi to drop his weapon, but he refused to comply. Sergeant Robinson deployed a taser, but it failed to subdue the suspect. Armed with a knife, Kubi advanced toward Sergeant Hoover, prompting both officers to open fire. The suspect was struck and fell to the ground, where officers immediately provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.
Kubi is charged with Attempted Murder, Attempted Murder on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the incident to determine the legality of the officers’ actions. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will also perform an internal review, and a Response to Resistance Board will convene to assess the findings. These results will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review.
The video footage is being released in the interest of transparency, though viewers are advised that it contains graphic content.
