Tallahassee Firefighters Battle Two Overnight Fires; One Injured

In the early hours of Friday, January 17, the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) responded to two structure fires, one of which resulted in a resident being hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

At approximately 12:12 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Graves Road after a concerned neighbor reported seeing smoke and flames. The exact location of the fire was determined with assistance from the Consolidated Dispatch Agency.

Upon arrival, crews found a two-story residence with heavy smoke and flames emanating from the first floor. Firefighters located the source of the fire in the kitchen area and confirmed all occupants had safely evacuated. One individual was transported to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

Later that morning, at around 7:30 a.m., TFD responded to a fire at a one-story church on South Monroe Street. Flames were discovered beneath the structure, but firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing significant damage. No injuries were reported.

Both incidents are under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. TFD received on-site assistance from the Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County EMS, and City of Tallahassee Utilities.

TFD urges residents to remain vigilant about fire safety, including ensuring smoke alarms are properly installed and functional. Working smoke alarms can provide critical early warnings, giving families the time needed to escape in case of a fire.
