FDLE Shares Cybersecurity Tips for National Data Privacy Week

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is providing cybersecurity guidance to Floridians during National Data Privacy Week, emphasizing the importance of protecting personal data in an increasingly digital world.

FDLE Cyber and Technology Bureau Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) Mike Duffey urged caution when sharing information with digital platforms, highlighting the need for vigilance in safeguarding personal privacy.

To enhance data security, FDLE recommends the following best practices:

  • Use Strong Passwords: Create passwords with at least 15 characters, including a mix of letters, numbers, and punctuation. Keep them private and never share them.
  • Install and Update Antivirus Software: Ensure real-time monitoring and regular updates to protect against malicious software.
  • Enable Firewalls: Modern operating systems include built-in firewalls—keep them activated to block unauthorized access.
  • Apply Security Updates Promptly: Install software patches as soon as they are released to minimize vulnerabilities.
  • Review Privacy Settings on Social Media: Regularly check platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) to control who can access your information.
  • Verify Downloads and Email Attachments: Confirm the legitimacy of sources before downloading files or opening email attachments.
  • Be Cautious with Personal Information Requests: Avoid sharing sensitive data without verifying the recipient.
  • Stay Alert to Scams and Fraud: Research offers and sellers before making online transactions. Avoid wiring money to unknown parties.
  • Secure Home Wi-Fi Networks: Use strong passwords and only share access with trusted individuals.
  • Protect Mobile Devices: Secure smartphones, tablets, and laptops with passwords and consider full-disk encryption.
