A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) sergeant shot and wounded a wanted suspect who drove his vehicle toward him Tuesday afternoon on the Northside.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Gossett Street. District 6 patrol officers were following up on a traffic stop involving the suspect, who had previously fled from police. When Sergeant Ben McEwan made contact with the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Michael Youmans, the suspect backed his vehicle between a trailer and a fence. The sergeant ordered him multiple times to exit the car with his hands up.
Youmans did not comply and instead reversed before driving toward the sergeant, prompting McEwan to fire multiple shots. The suspect continued driving forward before stopping. He then exited the vehicle, got onto his hands and knees, and asked nearby residents for a cigarette.
Officers provided emergency medical aid before transporting Youmans to a hospital, where he was last reported in stable condition.
Youmans, a white male, has a 13-page criminal history, including charges of resisting arrest, theft, burglary, and drug possession.
This marks the first officer-involved shooting of 2025 for JSO. Both the State Attorney’s Office and JSO are conducting investigations into the incident. Per Sheriff T.K. Waters’ commitment to transparency, JSO plans to release body camera footage within 21 days.
