Man Arrested After Fatal Shooting During Domestic Dispute in Port Charlotte

A man has been arrested after shooting and killing a woman in his home early Saturday morning, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:30 a.m. on March 1, 2025, reporting a shooting at a residence on McDill Drive. Upon arrival, officers found the suspect, identified as 67-year-old Jose Mogro, inside the master bedroom along with the victim and a witness.

Mogro and the witness were detained while deputies and EMS attempted to render aid to the victim, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Major Crimes detectives secured the area and launched an investigation.

According to statements provided by Mogro and the witness, the victim had left the residence the previous afternoon and returned around 2:00 a.m. She was reportedly making loud noises and slamming doors, keeping others awake. Mogro told her to quiet down before locking himself in his bedroom, stating he did not feel safe due to her behavior.

Approximately 20 minutes later, Mogro heard loud banging on the bedroom door. Armed with a firearm, he opened the door and was confronted by the victim, who was swinging her arms and moving toward him. Mogro then fired his weapon, striking her in the chest.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell addressed the incident, stating, “While the investigation is still active, I want to express my condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim. This is a terrible situation and will certainly have an impact far beyond the residence on McDill Drive. I pray for peace for everyone involved and for our community.”

Mogro was arrested and charged with Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon. Authorities noted that additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues. He was transported to the Charlotte County Jail, where he remains in custody.
