A Duval County jury has found Jaelin Leroy guilty of Manslaughter with a Firearm, Florida State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced. Leroy now faces up to 30 years in Florida State Prison, with sentencing to be determined by Judge London Kite at a later date.
The incident occurred on October 28, 2023, in Jacksonville’s Five Points neighborhood, the night of the Florida-Georgia football game. A large crowd was gathered when a gunshot rang out, causing people to flee. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers responded immediately and found Leroy holding a firearm, leading to his detention.
An investigation revealed that the victim was walking on Park Street with a group of friends when one individual turned back to speak with Leroy. The victim followed his friend during the conversation. Witnesses reported that Leroy suddenly pulled out a gun and shot the victim.
During questioning, Leroy claimed he felt threatened because the victim had his hands in his pockets and alleged that the friend had acted aggressively toward him.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Joe Licandro and Christina Stifler.
