A 20-year-old substitute teacher at LaBelle Middle School, Ty’Asia Holmes, was arrested on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, on multiple charges related to child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of minors.
The arrest followed a parent conference where school staff and Hendry County School Resource Officers were shown a video recorded on a student’s cell phone. The video depicted an altercation between students that occurred during a class on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. In the video, Holmes, the substitute teacher, is seen holding one student back while another student taunts her. Both students can be heard arguing, and Holmes is heard telling them to stop and resolve their conflict outside of school at the “park.”
Further investigation revealed that the student being held back was not a member of that particular classroom. It was discovered that Holmes allegedly allowed another student to call the front office and request that the out-of-class student be sent to her room for the confrontation.
A separate video provided by another student captured the entire interaction. This video was used by law enforcement to identify the individuals speaking. While no physical contact between the students was reported beyond the holding of one student, authorities determined the situation involved intimidation and physical threats.
The investigation concluded that Holmes conspired with the students and intentionally created the opportunity for the altercation to occur. The audio in the video reportedly contains profanity from both students and Holmes, and Holmes can be heard inciting and enabling the students to fight.
“I am disgusted and appalled at the behavior of this substitute teacher,” stated Sheriff Steve Whidden. “Schools should be a safe place for children and staff.” Sheriff Whidden added, “We will continue to work closely with the schools to ensure their safety.”
Holmes was arrested and charged with two counts of Child Neglect and eight counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. She was booked into the Hendry County Jail and held overnight without bond before being released this morning on a $35,000.00 bond.
