Officer Shoots Knife-Wielding Man Attacking Two People in Jacksonville

A man armed with two knives was fatally shot by a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) officer after attacking two individuals on Jillian Drive off Ricker Road on the Westside.

Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker of the JSO provided details about the incident, which occurred just after 7:00 p.m. A call for service reported a fight in the area, and Officer Delong Zheng, who was on patrol nearby, responded.

Upon arrival, residents directed Officer Zheng to an area between two houses where a man and a woman were found lying on the ground, bleeding. A 58-year-old Hispanic man was standing over them, holding two knives.

According to the JSO, Officer Zheng ordered the man to drop the knives. However, the man allegedly did not comply and instead moved as if to attack the injured individuals again. At that point, Officer Zheng discharged his firearm, striking the man.

Additional officers arrived quickly and provided aid until paramedics arrived. The armed man was transported to a hospital but died from his injuries.

The two victims who were attacked are being evaluated by medical staff and are expected to survive. The officer involved was not injured.

This is the seventh officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year. The State Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the incident. Upon completion of their investigation, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own internal review.
