The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has released preliminary details and video footage concerning an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Normandy Boulevard on Friday, May 4, 2025. The incident resulted in the death of 40-year-old Michael Lee Wright.
According to the JSO, the sequence of events leading to the shooting began on April 28, 2025, when officers responded to Wright’s mobile home for a reported seizure due to a narcotics overdose. During that incident, Wright became combative with paramedics, was handcuffed, and transported to a hospital where he continued his aggressive behavior, requiring restraints and sedation.
On May 3, 2025, Wright’s girlfriend reportedly chose to leave their residence due to his behavior. The following morning, May 4, she returned to collect her belongings. She reported that Wright was again combative, throwing objects at her and her vehicle. She then left and requested a police escort to safely retrieve her property.
JSO Officer P. Burke responded to the escort request. Upon his arrival, Wright, armed with scissors, allegedly ran towards the patrol SUV, jumped onto the hood, and began banging on the vehicle while making threats. Officer Burke then reversed the SUV and subsequently drove forward, striking Wright. Wright then dropped the scissors and removed his eyeglasses.
As Officer Burke exited his vehicle, Wright reportedly charged towards him. Officer Burke gave verbal commands for Wright to “put it down.” When Wright continued to advance, Officer Burke discharged his service weapon, striking Wright. Despite immediate attempts by officers to provide medical aid, Wright died at a local hospital.
The JSO emphasized that the released details are preliminary and subject to change as the investigation progresses. The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the incident to determine the legality of the officer’s actions. Following the State Attorney’s review, the JSO will conduct an internal review to ensure the officer’s actions were within department policy. Finally, a Response to Resistance Board will convene to review the findings, which will then be submitted to the Sheriff for final review.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office stated that this information is being released in the interest of transparency, but emphasized that final conclusions regarding the incident are pending the completion of all reviews.
