Dajshon Travis Asbell, 21, died on June 23, 2025, from injuries sustained after being shot by Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies during a standoff on June 20, 2025.
Deputies responded to 5744 Indian Trail in Keystone Heights to serve multiple arrest warrants on Asbell, including a violation of probation from a prior battery conviction, as well as charges for Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Resisting LEO with and without violence, stemming from an earlier altercation where he had fled.
Upon arrival, Asbell barricaded himself inside a utility shed on the property. The area was surrounded by patrol deputies, K9 units, and detectives from various units. The Crisis Negotiations Team spent several hours attempting to persuade Asbell to surrender peacefully, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Members of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team then deployed tear gas, but Asbell still refused to exit the shed. A tactical vehicle was used to remove the front door of the building. Asbell then exited, armed with an edged weapon, and charged at deputies. Deputies opened fire, striking Asbell, but he continued to violently resist. Less-lethal rounds and a Sheriff’s Office K9 were deployed, and Asbell was ultimately taken into custody. He received immediate medical treatment and was transported to the hospital for his injuries, where he later succumbed.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), in conjunction with the State Attorney’s Office, is the lead investigating agency for this incident. All further updates will be released by them.
