State Investigators Reviewing Female Inmate Death at Columbia County Jail

On Sunday, November 2, 2025, at approximately 5:07 p.m., detention deputies were alerted by inmates that a white female inmate was unresponsive in her bed within the general population housing unit. Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures, which continued until County Fire and EMS arrived and took over care.

The inmate was pronounced deceased at 5:24 p.m. by EMS personnel. Preliminary findings do not indicate foul play. As part of standard procedure, the inmate’s body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination. Sheriff Kitchings is in the process of notifying the next of kin.

Because this is an in-custody death, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has assumed responsibility for the investigation. All further inquiries regarding this case will be directed to FDLE.

Officials also clarified that this inmate was housed in a separate section of the jail from the area affected by the fire alarm incident last Thursday night.
