On Monday, August 5, 2024, while responding to Hurricane Debby, Sheriff Mike Prendergast noticed a motorist struggling to drive at a stop light. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Candace Wisecup, was seen driving erratically and turning her hazard lights on and off. Sheriff Prendergast initiated a traffic stop and called for backup.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the sheriff detected the odor of alcohol and observed Wisecup’s slurred speech. Wisecup was asked to exit the vehicle, and deputies found several open containers in her front seat, including three empty ‘shooters,’ an unopened ‘shooter,’ and an open can of beer. Wisecup’s cell phone, still playing videos, was also on the seat.
Wisecup performed poorly on the field sobriety exercises, blaming the storm winds for her inability to walk straight. She refused to follow instructions during other exercises and continued to talk over the deputies. After refusing a breathalyzer test, it was determined that she was driving on a suspended license.
“Unfortunately, while natural disasters like Hurricane Debby are barreling down on our county, some citizens believe that law enforcement isn’t watching,” said Sheriff Mike Prendergast. “Thankfully, Wisecup was caught and put behind bars before hurting anyone or causing any damage. This should remind everyone that our team is always here to ensure your safety, regardless of the weather.”
