Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has arrested Rodney Wesley, 20, in connection with a fatal multi-vehicle crash on I-295 North that killed a 66-year-old motorcyclist and caused an hours-long shutdown of the interstate.
Carjacking Spree Leads to Deadly Crash
Earlier this month, Wesley allegedly stole a Lexus while its owner was filling the tires with air. The abandoned vehicle was found the next day. Hours later, JSO officers responded to a gas station on 103rd Street for an armed carjacking, where a victim reported that Wesley approached him with a gun before stealing his car.
Shortly after the second carjacking, Wesley was driving the stolen vehicle the wrong way on I-295 North, leading to a pileup crash. The 66-year-old motorcyclist was struck by Wesley’s stolen vehicle and then hit by another car. This caused a chain reaction, forcing authorities to shut down the interstate for hours.
Following the crash, Wesley attempted to steal another car but was unsuccessful. He fled the scene by hanging onto the exterior of a passing semi-truck.
Investigation and Arrest
Detectives worked alongside the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) to link Wesley to the crimes using evidence at the scene and a photo lineup. JSO’s Gang Unit and Community Problem Response Unit located Wesley last week in the Jacksonville Heights neighborhood, where he attempted to flee on foot and hid behind a shed.
JSO’s K-9 officer and Police Service Dog, Doxa, assisted in his arrest. Wesley is now in Duval County Jail, facing multiple charges, including:
- Vehicular Homicide
- Grand Theft Auto
- Armed Carjacking
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if Wesley is linked to other crimes. JSO and FHP are working closely with the State Attorney’s Office to ensure prosecution.
