Clay County Mother Arrested After Child Brings Gun to Coppergate Elementary

At the start of the school day, a student at Coppergate Elementary in Middleburg, FL, discovered a gun in their backpack. The student immediately reported it to their teacher, who notified school supervisors and law enforcement. Deputies confiscated the firearm, and the school was placed in a “secure status,” allowing classes to continue while restricting entry and exit from the campus.

Investigators determined that the child’s mother, Sierra Bronner, had placed the gun in the backpack and instructed the child to return it to their father, who was unaware the firearm was inside. The child unknowingly brought the weapon to school.

Bronner was arrested and charged with child neglect and giving a firearm to a minor. She was taken to the Clay County Jail without incident, and the Department of Children and Families was notified.

Sheriff Michelle Cook emphasized the importance of parental supervision, stating, “It’s crucial that parents know what their children are bringing to school before they leave home. Look in their backpacks, ask questions and have conversations on what’s appropriate to bring to school. This was a poor decision and could’ve ended in tragedy. I’m grateful for our partnership with Clay County District Schools and applaud our school resource deputies and detectives for their work to keep our students safe.”
