Suspect Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting at Jacksonville Boat Ramp

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—A 37-year-old man is dead following an officer-involved shooting that took place on Monday, August 25, after a series of events that began at a local boat ramp.

According to a briefing from Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker, the incident began around 6 p.m. when a couple fishing at a boat ramp near Dutton Island Road and Mayport Road heard gunshots. They saw the suspect shooting a rifle into the water, and he then pointed the weapon at them. A struggle over the rifle ensued, and the husband was able to disarm the suspect and throw the rifle into the water.

The couple left in their vehicle but saw the suspect driving toward them head-on. They were able to avoid a collision, but the suspect’s vehicle then hit another car on Mayport Road before stopping near some bushes.

When officers arrived, they spent approximately 90 minutes giving verbal commands to the suspect, a white 37-year-old male, to exit his vehicle. At one point, the suspect reached into a rifle case, prompting officers to fire shots. The suspect did not survive.

Nine officers—A. Yanuzzi, A. Boyster, D. Sapp, T. Robinson, A. Henning, Z. Slatowski, M. Ross, P. Rickertsen, and C. Soucek—were involved in the shooting. None of the officers were injured.

This marks the 14th officer-involved shooting for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office this year. The State Attorney’s Office is on the scene conducting its investigation, after which the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own.
