BUNNELL, Fla. — A Volusia County man was arrested early Monday after fleeing deputies in a stolen pickup truck and attempting to hide beneath a house, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 2 a.m. on March 2, a deputy responded to the area of Mahogany Boulevard after receiving reports of a stolen vehicle nearby. The deputy soon located the truck as it sped through the area, running two stop signs on a dirt road. Radar indicated the vehicle was traveling 92 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Deputies attempted a traffic stop near Water Oak Road and County Road 2006, but the driver accelerated instead. Authorities said the suspect, later identified as James Myers, 33, of DeLand, drove at high speed through a yard before crashing the truck into a ditch while trying to return to the roadway.
Myers and a female passenger then fled on foot south on Cheryl Elaine Drive, briefly evading deputies.
A perimeter was established while a K-9 unit responded. K-9 Uno and Deputy Towns soon tracked Myers to a nearby home, where he was found hiding underneath the structure. Myers crawled out from under the house with the K-9 still attached to his arm.
Myers was arrested and charged with:
- Grand theft of a motor vehicle
- Fleeing and eluding
- Driving while license suspended (habitual offender)
- Resisting arrest without violence
- Dangerous excessive speeding
- Reckless driving
He was transported to AdventHealth Palm Coast for medical clearance before being booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he is being held without bond.
Sheriff Rick Staly praised the K-9 unit’s work during the arrest.
“Myers thought he could hide, but you can’t fool Uno who is trained to take a bite out of crime even if you crawl under a house,” Staly said.
Authorities also noted that aggravated assault charges without intent to kill were filed against Myers by the Bunnell Police Department in a separate case after investigators say he pointed a firearm at a woman and threatened her when she refused to participate in a robbery.
Officials say Myers has a lengthy criminal history that includes theft offenses, drug charges, habitual driving with a suspended license, fleeing from law enforcement, resisting officers, and multiple probation violations.
