JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers rescued a toddler who was accidentally locked inside a vehicle Monday at River City Marketplace, authorities said.
Officers Shawn Crocker and Phil Massicotte responded after the child’s mother called for help when the toddler became locked inside the car with the keys still inside. Police said the officers arrived at the scene within five minutes.
The toddler had unbuckled himself from his car seat, which made it unsafe for officers to break a window to gain access to the vehicle.
Instead, the officers used specialized tools to unlock the door. Authorities said the child was safely reunited with his mother in less than 10 minutes.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage showing the rescue.
Officials also reminded parents and caregivers about the dangers of heat inside vehicles as temperatures begin to rise.
According to the sheriff’s office, in 80 degree weather a vehicle’s interior temperature can climb to nearly 100 degrees within 10 minutes, exceed 110 degrees within 20 minutes, and reach more than 120 degrees within an hour. Authorities said the rapid temperature increase can occur even if windows are partially open, creating dangerous conditions for children or pets left inside vehicles.
