JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 22-year-old woman remains in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting Sunday evening during a response to a reported armed domestic dispute, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey said the incident occurred around 6 p.m. on June 7 on Kline Road East.
District 2 Patrol officers responded to a call involving an armed domestic dispute. Upon arrival, officers met with the suspect’s grandparents, who reported that their adult grandchild, identified as 22-year-old Kaiyan Alex Atkinson, had threatened them with a firearm during a confrontation.
Authorities said the grandparents gave officers permission to enter the backyard, where Atkinson was inside a shed located behind the home.
Officers attempted to call Atkinson out of the structure. According to the sheriff’s office, Atkinson eventually exited the shed but did not comply with officers’ commands and ran toward the front of the house.
With weapons drawn, officers repeatedly ordered Atkinson to show her hands. Investigators said Atkinson then reached into her waistband. Officer J. Kernodle deployed a Taser, striking Atkinson.
Shortly afterward, authorities said Atkinson pulled a firearm from her waistband and fired one shot toward officers. Officer J. Lenn and Officer N. Iezzi returned fire, striking Atkinson multiple times.
Officers secured the firearm and immediately began CPR and other life-saving measures until Jacksonville Fire Rescue personnel arrived. Atkinson was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said this is the agency’s 11th officer-involved shooting of 2026.
The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. Once that investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own review of the use of force.
