CALLAHAN, Fla. – A 17-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after a domestic dispute at a Callahan residence ended in a shooting that left one person critically injured, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded just after 1 p.m. on Monday, July 27, to a home on Gwen Avenue after receiving a 911 call reporting that someone had been shot multiple times.
When deputies arrived, they found the victim in the driver’s seat of a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital and was later reported to be in stable condition.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation determined the victim had been involved in an argument with another adult while 17-year-old Carrie Shay Holmes was present.
Investigators said witness statements and information gathered during the investigation indicate the victim reached for a firearm during the argument before placing it back into a holster on a couch. As the victim walked away, Holmes allegedly retrieved the firearm and fired four rounds.
Authorities said the wounded victim made it to the front of the property in an attempt to seek help, while Holmes went back inside the residence and called 911.
Holmes was arrested and charged with attempted murder. After being booked into the Nassau County Jail and Detention Center, Holmes was transferred to the custody of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.
Sheriff Bill Leeper said domestic violence incidents are among the most challenging calls deputies and detectives investigate and described the case as a tragedy that has permanently affected a family. He also encouraged anyone experiencing domestic violence or fearing for their safety to seek help before a situation escalates into violence.
The investigation remains ongoing.
