Police Shoot Armed Convicted Felon Near Orlando Gas Station

The Orlando Police Department (OPD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday, January 3, near John Young Parkway and Bus Center Boulevard.

At approximately 2:20 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff’s Office communications center alerted authorities to a man near a BP gas station dressed in all-black clothing and armed with a gun. Officers from both OPD and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, OPD officers encountered the armed suspect and issued multiple commands for him to drop his weapon. The suspect failed to comply, prompting officers to shoot him. The suspect was transported to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Authorities identified the suspect as a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history, including charges of drug possession, theft, and aggravated battery. He recently completed a 20-year sentence in Miami-Dade County for second-degree murder, carrying a concealed firearm, and resisting an officer with violence, having been released in 2023.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured and has been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will conduct an independent review of the incident, which will be forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office for evaluation. The Orlando Police Department will also carry out an internal investigation.

The officer’s body-worn camera was active during the incident, and footage will be released to the public within 30 days, as required by policy.
