Port Charlotte Man Accused of Seven Years of Sexual Abuse Dies by Suicide as Deputies Attempt Arrest

A 49-year-old Port Charlotte man took his own life as deputies arrived to arrest him on sexual abuse charges.

On January 20, 2025, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a report alleging the sexual assault of a 16-year-old female by 49-year-old Eberto Pupo Calzada. The victim disclosed that the abuse had been ongoing for seven years. The Major Crimes Unit began an investigation, during which they gathered evidence and obtained detailed disclosures from the victim, leading to probable cause for Calzada’s arrest.

On January 23, 2025, detectives obtained a warrant charging Calzada with Sexual Battery on a Victim Over 12 but Under 18 Years Old by Familial or Custodian. Deputies attempted to serve the arrest warrant around 9 p.m. at Calzada’s residence. However, as law enforcement approached, Calzada took his own life with a single gunshot wound to the head.

The investigation into the case remains ongoing.

“While this is certainly not the outcome we wanted, at least this young woman no longer has to live in fear of this individual. I will keep my personal feelings about his despicable actions to myself and instead offer my condolences to the people who cared about him. Thank you to the Major Crimes Unit for your efforts to bring him to justice, though he was too cowardly to face it,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell.
