Jacksonville Man Guilty of Attempted Murder, Faces Decades in Prison

A Duval County jury has found Brian Caldwell-Mitchell guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The verdict, announced by State Attorney Melissa Nelson, means Caldwell-Mitchell faces a maximum of 30 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will preside over his sentencing at a later date.

The charges stem from an incident on August 15, 2024, when Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol officers were alerted to a patient at a local hospital who had sustained six gunshot wounds. The victim had been driven to the hospital by a friend and neighbor, both of whom were questioned by law enforcement. They informed police that the shooting occurred in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood, where investigators later found shell casings and blood in the roadway.

According to witness testimony, the victim had stopped his car in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood and exited to speak with someone. Upon returning to his car window, a black vehicle stopped ahead of them. Caldwell-Mitchell reportedly emerged from the black car and approached the victim. He then pushed the victim and drew a firearm, at which point the victim also produced a gun. Caldwell-Mitchell fired 12 shots at the victim, who took cover behind his car before collapsing.

As a previously convicted felon, Caldwell-Mitchell is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Authorities recovered Caldwell-Mitchell’s firearm two days later at his ex-girlfriend’s house, and forensic analysis confirmed that shell casings found at the scene matched the recovered gun.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
