United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the arrest of 34-year-old Brandon Ejae Elliot of Tampa, who has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his cellmate at the United States Penitentiary-II in the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County. If convicted, Elliot faces a potential sentence of up to life in federal prison.
According to court records, the incident occurred on December 3, 2022, during a lockdown at the prison. Other inmates reported hearing fighting and yelling from Elliot’s cell. When prison staff entered the cell, they discovered Elliot’s cellmate unresponsive with multiple puncture wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators noted that Elliot had scratches consistent with a struggle, and a sharp metal object was recovered from his cell. Another inmate reportedly told investigators that Elliot had admitted to the killing through an air vent following the incident.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Prosecutor Hannah Nowalk is handling the case. Elliot remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
