Jacksonville Introduces Cutting-Edge Holographic Welcome Message at Airport

On December 19, 2024, Jacksonville made history by debuting a groundbreaking holographic communication platform at Jacksonville International Airport. The lifelike, 3D hologram, featuring a welcoming message from Mayor Donna Deegan, greets travelers as they deplane, marking one of the first instances of such technology being used in a major U.S. city.

The innovative system, powered by AI, offers the message not only in English but also in numerous other languages, including Spanish. The 7-foot-tall Proto device, designed by U.S. startup Proto, projects a highly realistic video that appears to show the mayor herself, with the hologram providing interactive capabilities and live feed transmission.

“It’s incredibly exciting to debut this message at JAX, and just in time for the holidays,” said Mayor Deegan. “This continues the City of Jacksonville’s commitment to investing in cutting-edge technology that improves communication and enhances the lives of our citizens.”

Positioned just outside airport security in a central courtyard, the hologram captures the attention of passengers before they head toward baggage claim.

Mark VanLoh, CEO of the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, expressed pride in the project, noting, “We are thrilled that JAX, in partnership with the city, will be one of the first airports in the nation to debut this amazing technology.”

The holographic box has interactive capabilities and can be used for live communications, as Proto boxes allow real-time video feeds from anywhere in the world. This technology has already been adopted by Fortune 500 companies, sports franchises, celebrities, and institutions like universities and medical centers.

Sponsorship for the Proto Box comes from JAXEPICS, as part of the City of Jacksonville’s efforts to establish itself as the Small Business Capital Center of the South.
