JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — A 19-year-old man who nearly drowned last month has reunited with the officer who helped save his life, marking an emotional moment for first responders and the community.
The Jacksonville Beach Police Department shared that Cpl. LaMont recently met again with Joshua, a Jacksonville resident rescued from the ocean on April 20.
According to officials, Joshua was swimming near 6th Avenue South around 7 p.m. when he was knocked down by a wave and began struggling in the water. Friends attempted to help before calling for assistance.
Assistant Captain Rob Emahiser and LG/EMT Evan Rhodes with Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue responded quickly and pulled Joshua from the water. Cpl. LaMont arrived shortly after and assisted with rescue efforts before Joshua was transferred to Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel.
Joshua was taken to Beaches Baptist Hospital, where he spent several days on life support.
During the recent reunion, Joshua thanked Cpl. LaMont and others involved in the rescue, showing his recovery progress and expressing appreciation for the efforts that saved his life.
Police said Joshua has since shared plans to pursue a career in law enforcement and is expected to join Cpl. LaMont for a ride-along as part of that goal.
Officials credited the coordinated response between Ocean Rescue, fire-rescue personnel and hospital staff for the successful outcome.
“This story is a reminder that behind every successful rescue is a team of dedicated professionals,” the department said.
