Suspect Killed After Pointing Gun at Officers in Jacksonville Officer-Involved Shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot and killed by police late Monday night after allegedly pointing a handgun at officers responding to a disturbance, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey said the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. May 4 on Rigel Road.

Officers were initially dispatched to an armed criminal mischief call involving a man who had reportedly kicked in the doors of four occupied homes while armed with a handgun. Authorities said the suspect, described as a man in his 30s, made contact with residents and made concerning statements before leaving the homes.

As officers were speaking with victims, the suspect returned and approached them. Officials said he raised a handgun and pointed it at officers. Despite commands to drop the weapon, the suspect did not comply.

Officers then opened fire, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Authorities said he had prior felony convictions in both Florida and Texas.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Officer R. Vazquez, Officer G. Comayagua, Officer J. Pallint and Officer A. Schmidt. No officers were injured.

The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation. Once that is complete, the sheriff’s office will conduct an internal review.

Officials said this marks the eighth officer-involved shooting for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 2026.
