Mother Arrested for 2-Year-Old Son’s Fatal Drug Intoxication in Jacksonville

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives have arrested 43-year-old Melissa Rae Harper in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son.

The case dates back to March 2024, when officers responded to a local emergency room where Harper had brought her unresponsive child. Medical staff attempted to save him, but the toddler passed away shortly after arriving.

An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be Combined Drug Intoxication of Fentanyl and Xylazine.

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, detectives took Harper into custody, charging her with Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child. She is currently being held at the Duval County Jail.
